Wastewater Treatment Information

The objective of this website is to provide you with information about a variety of wastewater topics. Selections include an in-depth review of the most common biological wastewater treatment process in the world: activated sludge. Any reasonable discussion about activated sludge necessarily requires that key process control formulas, such as mean cell residence time (MCRT) and the food-to-mass (F:M) ratio, be reviewed. Therefore, several important calculations used to evaluate the performance of a biological reactor are provided.

One of my favorite wastewater subjects is oxygen uptake rate testing (OUR) so a lot of detail about this very useful and informative test is provided. Directly related to the oxygen uptake rate are the concepts of oxygen supply to, and the oxygen demand in, a biological reactor. The intimate relationship between activated sludge (or any biological treatment process), the oxygen uptake rate, the organic loading on the bioreactor, and the total oxygen demand in a biological reactor, are thoroughly considered.

Wastewater treatment involves many different unit processes from equalization, to membrane bioreactors, clarification, sludge dewatering, and disinfection, to name just a few. Therefore, we will take a look at different unit processes and this section will grow over time.

There are a number of outstanding software programs that allow you to design and model wastewater systems, design and model reverse osmosis systems, and make assumptions about the uncertainty in a variable and then simulate that uncertainty to estimate the probability of a result. I think you will be impressed by the quality and capability of these different software programs. And regarding simulation and uncertainty, we will explore several statistical concepts. The day-to-day operation of water and wastewater treatment systems results in the generation of large quantities of data. Knowledge of statistics is required to properly analyze the wealth of process and laboratory data that exists.
